MAD Dog
Tekkin De
Floor
Published
on: 8/22/08.
MAD
DOG IS his
name and
Barbados
helped put
him back in
the
dancehall
game.
When
Donavan
Lawrence was
looking for
a rhythm, he
thought
those plates
being done
in his
native land
Jamaica were
overdone and
he needed a
fresh
approach.
The
dancehall
artiste has
been on the
stage for 15
years but
his two new
hits Tek
De Floor
(Early
Morning) and
Wine It
Wine It
(Bounce Pun
It) have
gained him a
new found
popularity
and he
readily
admits that
it is by far
his greatest
hit.
In a
recent
interview
with
GROOVE
Magazine, he
said too
many
artistes
were tied to
one beat.
"In
Jamaica you
find that
there are 20
artistes on
one beat and
it is just
the big guns
that get
played on
it, the
household
names and I
said, 'I
need to get
something
different',"
he said.
This was
what brought
him to
Barbados in
2007 to
speak with
engineer,
Terry
Terry Dog
Denny from
Caribbean
Records.
"I said
Terry we
gotta do
something
different,
something
with a
little
dancehall
and still a
little soca.
He gave me
this tune
and ask me
what I would
like lay
down and it
went pum-
pum- pum-
pum- pum-
pum- pum pum,
early
morning and
we just wake
up. I took
it back to
Jamaica and
when I took
it back
everybody
liked it.
Once you
sing 'bout
the ladies
it gone,"
said Mad
Dog.
Denny
said he was
working with
the Jamaican
artiste for
the last two
years and
the beat
took about a
week to put
together.
"He sang
the song and
I built the
beat to
suit. Mad
Dog
comes here
to get that
feeling
because the
rhythms here
are not like
what they
build there,
they are
different.
Since I've
worked with
Mad Dog
I have been
getting a
lot of calls
from
Jamaica," he
said.
He has
also
produced
Inn Deh
for Mad
Dog.
Mad
Dog said
once he had
the song in
hand he then
tested the
rhythm at
the Dutty
Fridays,
Likkle Bit
and other
fêtes and
according to
him "it
mash".
The songs
have also
been doing
well on the
Jamaican
charts and
he is
working on a
video for
the hit
song, once
again using
good
Barbadian
talent. He
said you
have to move
around the
region to
get the best
for your
music.
"I am
just working
on the
Early
Morning
video and it
was shot by
a Bajan,
Nicholas
King. Me and
Terry are
history
round here
with the
beats!" |
No
Ras-Iley This Year
BARBADOS' most
energetic calypsonian Darcy Ras
Iley Small will not be jumping,
prancing or shaking his six-foot
locks this year. The diminutive
Ras Iley, who celebrates 25
years in the entertainment
business this year, is suffering
from sciatica a pain caused by a
compression or irritation of the
sciatic nerve in the lower back.
It has forced him to scrap his
plans for a big Crop-Over
celebration this season. During
an interview with the DAILY
NATION yesterday, Ras Iley
explained that he was in
excruciating pain and was taking
time to let his body recuperate.
The former jockey, who is an
entertainer and a farmer, said
all those strenuous tasks
contributed to his injury. "I
can't sit down for too long. I
can't drive anything manual. I
am in a lot of pain in the lower
part of my spine," he stated. He
is also under strict doctors'
orders to rest. "I had plans to
celebrate my 25 years in
entertainment this year but I
have to rest. I have notified
people. The public have been
hearing songs and they have not
heard Ras Iley. But when you
look at the quality of music
that I have been producing since
the 1980s, and my reputation, I
can't resort to any sound
because it would ruin what I
spent so many years to build and
what I have with my fans," he
noted. But the 44-year-old who
became the 1986 Road March King
with his signature song Spring
Garden On Fire, is still
planning to hold his 25th
anniversary celebrations later
this year. He also has new
material which he will release
around that time and he has a
scheduled performance in Boston
in November. And he said a
resounding "no" to the question
that many people have asked him
; Did his injury come from his
crowning glory? "I asked the
doctors and they said my locks
had nothing to do with it," he
said, managing a faint smile.
Ras Iley is confident that he
will get back to form and he
wants his fans to give him all
the love and support they can as
he tries to heal his body. "To
come onto the stage I have to be
fully fit. I can't stand up and
do nothing like Shadow. I have
to be energetic," he stated.

Ryan Mark
to launch Tabernacle in Barbados
By Regina Selman
Jamaican gospel artiste Ryan
Mark, formerly known as Prodigy,
will be launching his new album
entitled Tabernacle in Barbados
tomorrow.
Bloodwash Records, in
association with Chosen Records
out of Jamaica, will present the
launch of Ryan Marks album,
tomorrow, April 5th, at the
Limelight Cafe. The event will
commence at 8:00 p.m. and will
feature local gospel artistes,
Neil Crichlow, Gozzy, Mr.
Militant, Dragon Slayer and
more.
Ryan Mark, who was ranked one
of the top eight gospel deejays
in Jamaica by the Love Herald in
2003, has made appearances on
some of Jamaicas biggest gospel
shows and has shared the stage
with the likes of Kirk Franklin,
Bobby Jones, Tobymac, Audio
Adrenaline, Papa San, Chevelle
Franklin, Stitchie, Dj Nicholas,
Prodigal Son and many others.
Music producer Ramon Dummett,
of Bloodwash Records, based in
Barbados, told the Barbados
Advocate that the stage is
already set to receive Ryan Mark
and his wife, who will be flying
into Barbados for the special
event. The event, which he
expects to have a lasting
impact, is targeted at a younger
audience, those between the ages
of 15 to 35, who are interested
in the ultimate uplifting
experience. Tickets are going
fast at just $25 dollars and
persons are being encouraged to
get to the event early, since
there will likely be standing
room only as the show takes off.
Dummett has noted that Ryan
Mark will not only be paying a
visit to Barbados, but it is
likely that he will be visiting
some schools across the island
to do some school ministry as he
continues to share his
life-changing story with youth.
Dummett says the launching of
Tabernacle at the Limelight Cafe
will also serve as a stepping
stone, paving the way for
Christian events to be held at
the Cafe, on a regular basis.
This is something the local
Christian community has been
crying out for, for a long time,
as young persons are eager to
spend their weekends in a safe,
wholesome and uplifting
environment. He credits Alan
Sheppard and the management team
of the Limelight Cafe for making
such possible.
Meanwhile, Bloodwash Records
will continue to advance its
work of pushing local artistes
forward, hence the move to
include local artistes in the
event. Bloodwash Records, a
record label, has been in
existence for approximately 4
years, having commenced
operations in 2004. The label
has grown from a tiny bedroom
studio, to one that now
officially has two signed Gospel
Reggae/Dancehall artistes so
far, and which specialises in
music creation and arrangements
for music artistes, commercials,
sound-tracks and albums. |

MONTANO NAMED "CARIBBEAN MUSIC AMBASSADOR"
 |
| |
NEW
YORK, NY (RHONA FOX, INC.) - The
indomitable soca monarch Machel Montano
continues his reign over carnival events
around the world when he brings volcanic
heat to the
Official Atlanta Caribbean Carnival on
Saturday, May 24 in Atlanta, Georgia, and
then the
Best of the Best Concert
in Miami,
Florida on May 25.
Montano heads to Atlanta for more than just
a highly anticipated performance; he will be
honored with the groundbreaking Phoenix
Award from the City of Atlanta and named the
"Caribbean Music Ambassador."
"I'm very grateful for the honor," states
Montano. "I think this is significant with
the future vision of Machel Montano, which
is going to be Caribbean-based, with
carnival being the quintessential expression
of Caribbean cultures and the way in which
they collide."
The presentation will take place during the
entertainment program at the Carnival's
Festival Village, with featured performances
from soca artists Iwer George, Jamesy P,
Problem Child, Tizzy, and Zoela, among
others to be backed by De Soca Unit. The
general Atlanta Carnival festivities will
follow the Parade of Bands, and will be held
in the historic Auburn district from noon to
10pm in downtown Atlanta.
Montano is set to headline the Atlanta
Carnival Eruption Concert following the
award presentation, performing alongside
Patrice Roberts, the world-renowned HD Band,
and many surprise guest artists, and will be
held at the historic Atlanta
Underground-Georgia Freight Depot. This show
is the premier event of the Atlanta Carnival
weekend, and is destined to be another sold
out concert for Machel.
"We're extremely excited about Machel
Montano's visit to Atlanta," says Marc
Stewart of Island Coast Entertainment, one
of the main event promoters. "Given Machel's
worldwide prominence, we feel confident
about the heated performance that he will be
bringing to downtown Atlanta, which not only
helps to promote our Caribbean culture in
this international epicenter, but also helps
to reposition Atlanta as a viable
destination for Carnival-which is held
during Memorial Day weekend." |
